What's Happening in Edmonton?
There are many fantastic opportunities for students to explore music and theatre in our lovely city! Here's some to take note of!
M Is For Music - Saturday May 11 - Symphony for Kids
Sarah T. Murdoch is a curious eight-year-old girl who isn’t looking forward to her school’s field trip to the symphony. She is sure that M stands for Meh, not music. There are ZERO Jellyfish at the Winspear Centre and not a single dinosaur. But could music be its own adventure? In this delightful introduction to the symphony, Sarah explores the big questions: What is music for? Where does it come from? And is fancy-schmancy orchestra music really for everyone? Let your imagination be captivated by the ESO while following along on Sarah’s adorable musical journey!
The Three Musketeers - April 20 - May 12
Adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, this comedy follows the swashbuckling adventures of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and the young, brave D’Artagnan. Newly arrived to Paris, with the skill of a swordsman and the heart of a warrior, D’Artagnan wishes to join the renowned Musketeers, but first he must prove himself worthy. To win the heart of Constance and save king and country he sets off with The Musketeers to thwart a plot by the evil Cardinal Richelieu. Together, they’ll fight All For One, and One For All!
Das Rheingold - May 28, 29, 31 & June 1
Wotan as Maestro? Orchestra on risers instead of the pit? Opera in the round? The final production of our 60th season is marked by an unconventional and groundbreaking rendition of Wagner’s Das Rheingold. This version steps away from the conventional Wagnerian grandeur, embracing a daring, contemporary style featuring state of the art projections and avantgarde stagecraft.
Set in the intimate Maclab Theatre at Citadel, this performance will be an auditory and visual spectacle, directed by Peter Hinton, a celebrated Canadian theatre and opera director. Prepare for an experience that not only revitalizes the classic narrative but also challenges our expectations of what opera can be, ensuring a memorable journey with this timeless work. This arrangement makes its Canadian premiere in a brand new production.
From Broadway to Hollywood- May 31-June 1
The road from Hollywood to Broadway is paved with unforgettable songs and stories. Jack Everly, Ted Keegan (Broadway’s Phantom) and rising star Katie Scarlett Swaney have a line-up of music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Barry, Stephen Schwartz, James Horner, Stephen Sondheim, and Irving Berlin that will remind you of the musical magic of theatre and cinema. Your ESO will perform your favourite music and songs from Titanic, The Phantom of the Opera, La La Land, Wicked, and more!
